DAEGU (Yonhap News) ― A high-school student was found dead over the weekend in front of his apartment building here in an apparent suicide, police said Monday, in what would be the eighth such case in six months in the city of Daegu over school violence.
A security guard found the 16-year-old student’s body on Saturday evening in front of the apartment building and reported it to police. Police have not found a suicide note but they suspect the student jumped to his death.
Shortly before the apparent suicide, the student, whose name was withheld, wrote that he might take his own life in a message on KakaoTalk, a popular mobile-phone message service in South Korea.
Also, the student left a message hinting at committing suicide on his computer, according to police.
According to the police investigation, the student suffered an injury to his eardrum in January after being beaten by his seniors.
They were members of a football club.
In December, a middle-school student in the southeastern city of Daegu leapt to his death over school bullying, sparking nationwide public concern.
Since then, six other teenage students from Daegu have died in apparent suicides despite the government’s large-scale campaign to crack down on school violence and bullying.
