The foreign ministry has suspended a senior diplomat in Auckland from regular duties for alleged ethical lapses, a ministry official said Saturday.

   The consul general in Auckland, whose name was withheld, was called home on June 15 after being accused of engaging in a scuffle with a fellow Korean official posted in New Zealand and sexually harassing female embassy staff.

   The ministry will hold a disciplinary committee on Tuesday to decide the level of punishment for the diplomat, the official said on the condition of anonymity.

   The consul general has been accused of allegedly touching some female staff at a karaoke bar in Auckland, but he denied the allegations.

   The alleged brawl between the consul general in Auckland and the Korean education ministry official also erupted on June 14 over budget uses for the Korean education center in New Zealand, ministry officials said earlier.

   The education ministry official is in charge of the Korean education center.

   The foreign ministry sent a team of investigators to the Korean consular office in Auckland, where the scuffle broke out, and checked CCTV footage of the dispute, officials said.

   The ministry has declared a zero-tolerance policy on lapses involving diplomats since former foreign minister Yu Myung-hwan resigned in 2010 over accusations of nepotism involving his daughter.

외교통상부가 직무기강 문제로 소환된 주(駐) 오클랜드 총영사 A씨(심의관급)를 보직 해임한 것으로 14일 확인됐다. 

외교부 당국자는 "A씨가 교육과학기술부 소속의 뉴 질랜드 한국교육원장 B씨와 교육원 예산 사용 문제로 다투다 몸싸움을 했고, 노래방 회식 자리에선 여직원들과 번갈아 가며 춤을 추면서 몸을 더듬는 등 성희롱 의혹이 제기됐다"며 "공직기강 차원에서 지난 10일 보직해임 조치를 내렸다"고 밝혔다.

    이 당국자는 "제기된 의혹에 대한 조사결과를 토대로 오는 17일 열리는  징계위 원회에서 최종 징계 수위를 결정할 것"이라고 전했다.

    그러나 A씨는 성희롱 의혹을 부인하는 것으로 알려졌다.

    외교부는 지난달 15일 직무기강 문제로 제보가 들어온 A씨를 국내로 소환해  조 사를 벌였다.

    김성환 외교부 장관은 2011년 `상하이 스캔들' 사건 이후 직무기강 해이 사건에 대해 무(無)관용 원칙으로 엄중히 대처할 것임을 천명해 왔다.

    그러나 지난 2월에는 주 중국 우한총영사가 회계 문제로 소환되는 등 기강 해이 사건은 끊이지 않고 있다.
