LONDON _ Kim Yeon-koung scored 28 points as South Korea surprised Italy 3-1 Tuesday night to earn an Olympic semifinal match against the U.S. women’s volleyball team.

The top-ranked U.S. women swept the Dominican Republic in an earlier quarterfinal. Brazil and Japan will play in the other semifinal on Thursday.

Fourth-ranked Italy, which was among the favorites heading into the games, came out strong but ultimately couldn’t keep up with the quick No. 15 South Koreans, who won 18-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-18.

The South Korean players linked arms and spun around in circles on the court to celebrate the victory.

“It’s great to win this,” Kim said. “I can’t express my happiness.”

South Korea’s best finish in the Olympics was the bronze medal at the 1976 Montreal Games. Italy has never medaled in volleyball, which became an Olympic sport in 1964.

Tuesday’s quarterfinal was the first time the two teams had met in the knockout round of the Olympics. Italy scored an early-round victory over the South Koreans in Athens, and South Korea had a 3-2 win in Sydney.

Antonella del Core had 15 points for the Italians, whose only loss in the opening round was against Russia.

“We were very nervous, that’s what went wrong,” del Core said. “We didn’t have patience and they were very strong defenders.”

South Korea concluded the preliminary round with a five-set loss to China. A five-set match was the only way mathematically for both teams to advance to the quarterfinals. Had one team won all three points, the other team would have had to depend on results later in the day.

Both coaches emphatically denied that they had purposely pushed the match to five sets to ensure a quarterfinal berth for both teams.

Kim was the preliminary round’s highest scorer with 137 points.

“They absolutely deserved this victory,” Italy coach Massimo Barbolini said. 

“They played better than us.”

Earlier Tuesday, defending champion Brazil denied Russia match point six times before winning 3-2 to earn a spot in the semifinals. They will face Japan, which used finesse to counter strength in a 3-2 victory over China.

세계 랭킹이 한국보다 11계단이나 높은 이탈리아의 탄탄한 수비진도 김연경의 강타 앞에서는 홍해가 갈라지듯 빈틈을 크게 노출했다.

김연경은 수비에서도 최고의 활약을 했다.

18번의 리시브 중 14번을 정확히 세터에게 연결했고 18차례 디그를 시도해 12번이나 정확히 받아내는 등 '만능 레프트'의 재능을 유감없이 발휘했다.

이날 경기를 중계한 영국 방송 BBC의 해설진도 김연경에 대해 "힘이 좋고 위치 선정이 완벽하다"고 평가하면서 "슈퍼 우먼"이라는 표현까지 동원해 입에 침이 마르도록 칭찬했다.

한국 배구를 평정하고 일본을 거쳐 터키로 건너간 김연경은 해외에서도 최고로 평가받는 공격수다.

올해 유럽배구연맹(CEV) 챔피언스리그에서 소속팀을 우승으로 이끌고 최우수선수상(MVP)과 최다득점상을 독식, 유럽 무대까지 정복했다.

국제배구연맹(FIVB)에서도 이번 대회에서 김연경에게 '배구 영웅'이라는 칭호를 붙이며 배구 홍보의 전면에 세우기도 했다.

하지만 15위의 세계랭킹에서 드러나듯 한국팀의 전력이 상대적으로 약하고 조별리그에서 즐비한 강호들과 함께 편성된 탓에 '메달 전망'은 어둡다는 평이 많았다.

게다가 올림픽에 오기 직전 원 소속팀인 흥국생명과 빚어진 갈등이 해결되지 않은 터라 김연경 자신도 온전히 경기에 집중할 수 없는 상황이었다.

그러나 "나 때문에 못하면 안된다"며 오히려 마음을 다잡은 김연경은 조별리그부터 지치지 않는 스파이크를 날리며 한국을 '죽음의 조'에서 탈출시키더니 이탈리아까지 물리치고 준결승에까지 올려 놓았다.

이날 경기를 마치고 감격에 겨워 서로 얼싸안고 울먹이던 선수들 한가운데에도 김연경이 있었다.

팀의 구심점으로 완벽하게 올라선 김연경의 활약 덕에 '어게인 1976'를 향해 달리는 한국 여자 배구의 꿈에도 반짝 볕이 들었다.
