The father of a 23-year-old man who sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl earlier this month said Thursday his family is suffering from excessive attention by the media.

“Our son went wrong, and now our entire family is about to break down. Please spare my family,” 55-year-old Kim said.

He begged the media not to reveal personal affairs of the family, and said too much attention was tearing the family apart.

Kim said he first found out about his son’s crime last week when he recognized his son’s face on the wanted list posted at a nearby store. He confronted his son, who then confessed.

“When I saw the list, I just wanted to close my eyes. … I felt like the sky was collapsing on me,” Kim said in an interview with a local newspaper on Tuesday.

After mulling the matter for three days, Kim and his wife finally talked his son into confessing to his crime.

Kim said since their son’s arrest, his wife had been showing signs of anxiety disorder, and finally collapsed this morning.

Kim said although he felt deep remorse toward the victim and felt guilty as a parent, he could not help worrying about his son’s future.

“I know my son committed a crime, but for him to be completely ostracized from society is too much,” he said.

“Just imagine how we felt when we got our own son to turn himself in,” Kim said.

광주 여고생 성폭행범 김모(23)씨의 아버지는 20일 연합뉴스와의 통화에서 떨리는 목소리로 김씨 가족에게 쏠린 세간의 관심으로 인한 고통을 호소했다.

김씨의 아버지는 “오늘 아침 아내가 실신해 병원에 데려갔다. 그 모습을 보며 너무 답답해서 전화를 걸게 됐다”고 말했다.

그는 공중전화기 너머로 몇 번이고 숨을 가다듬으며 힘겹게 말을 이었다.

그는 “아들이 잘못을 했지만 사회에서 완전히 매장시키는 것도 아니고 너무 이슈화가 되는 것 같다”며 부모로서, 가족으로서의 괴로움을 토로했다.

그는 “피해자에게 최대한 보상을 하고 싶었고…. 원만하게 합의를 하고 싶었는데…”라며 말끝을 흐렸다.

자식을 둔 부모로서 피해 여학생에 대한 미안한 마음과 자식을 잘못 가르쳤다는 자책감이 컸지만 아들의 미래에 대한 걱정이 자꾸 드는 것 역시 어쩔 수 없었다고 김씨 아버지는 털어놨다.

김씨의 어머니는 김씨의 자수 후 심한 불안 증세를 보여오다가 이날 아침 실신한 것으로 전해졌다.

김씨 아버지는 “자식을 자수시켰을 때 심경은 오죽했겠는가?”라며 남은 가족을 위해서라도 김씨와 그 가족의 개인적인 이야기까지 모두 언론의 지나친 관심 자제를 당부했다.

한편 김씨의 아버지는 지난 14일 오후 6시께 담배를 사러 인근 편의점에 갔다가 아들의 모습이 담긴 수배 전단을 보고 아들의 범행 사실을 처음 알고 사흘간 고민 끝에 아들에게 자수하도록 설득했다.

김씨 아버지는 아들이 성폭행 사실을 인정하자 지인에게 자수 방법을 상의해 17일 밤 김근 광주 광산경찰서장에게 직접 전화를 걸었고 아내와 함께 이날 밤 9시 35 분께 광산경찰서 수완지구대로 직접 아들을 데리고 가 자수시켰다.
