When an opponent approaches you, there are various ways of taking action depending on how far the opponent is from you.

1. Using your knee when the opponent is near you

If the opponent is already up front and close to you, chances are that you do not have enough room to make a frontward kick. Using your knee would be the best option in hitting the opponent with force at a close distance. If you do have room to make a kick, try using the ball or heel of your foot for the blow.

When using your knee, swiftly bring it upwards to hit the opponent's groin, stomach, legs or other parts of the body to knock out the opponent.

No need to draw your knee up too high because it will be difficult to keep balance. Also use your hands in front of your face to protect yourself and be prepared as shown in the picture.

2. Using the ball and heel of the foot when the opponent is far from you

The firmest part of the foot is the ball and heel. Using these parts will help in any techniques related to the foot. These parts are useful in hitting the stomach, chest, groin and face.

Kicking forward is also known as front kick in taekwondo, which is quickly folding and then unfolding the leg forward to hit the opponent. The ball and heel of the foot or the whole foot are often used in actual taekwondo competitions.

Both techniques require perfect timing because you are up against a moving opponent and practice will help you be prepared for the worst. Have a friend hold up a pillow or a kicking pad to practice. Face each other and take turns in practicing attacks using your foot or knee.
