South Korea edged out Russia 1-0 in the two countries' women's football friendly match at home on Sunday.

Striker Ji So-yun scored in the dying moments of the match at Incheon Football Stadium, located just west of Seoul, to lift the home side over the visitors in a prep match ahead of this year's FIFA Women's World Cup.

South Korea and Russia will go head-to-head again on Wednesday in Daejeon, about 160 kilometers south of Seoul.

Ji, who plays club football for Chelsea Ladies in England, only arrived in South Korea on Saturday and entered the match as a substitute in the 28th minute.

Ji covered a lot of ground on offense, threading passes and launching mid-range shots to breathe life into what had been a lethargic South Korean offense.

Her efforts only bore fruit in the 90th minute, when the match seemed destined to end in a scoreless draw. Yeo Min-ji set up Ji inside the box and the 24-year-old forward struck the ball past Margarita Shirokova for the match's only goal.

It was Ji's 37th goal in her 73rd appearance.

South Korea will make its second appearance at the FIFA Women's World Cup this year, which will be held in Canada.

After playing Russia, the national team will gather again on May 8 and then travel to the United States on May 20 to set up camp there. South Korea's first World Cup match in Group E will be against Brazil on June 9, followed by Costa Rica on June 13 and Spain on June 17.
