An international Catholic charity group is building nursing homes in two North Korean towns despite mounting international sanctions on the country's nuclear and missile programs, a US broadcaster reported Tuesday.

Caritas Internationalis has decided to build nursing homes in Hamhung and Kowon in South Hamkyong Province, as facilities for old people there are far from enough, Radio Free Asia reported, citing the aid group.

Construction work began this summer, and Caritas officials have visited the construction sites, the broadcaster said.

Headquartered in Germany, the relief organization is also building greenhouses across the North to provide vegetables to patients, according to the broadcaster. (Yonhap)
