A British doctor who led a double life with two women had killed himself after his secret was uncovered, British media reported Sunday.

An inquest into the death of Festus Ojagbemi found that for the past seven years, he lived with his long-term partner Jackie Hammond during the week and spent weekends with Bamidele Ayeni, who is a popular Nigerian singer.

The 49-year-old practitioner from Kent had promised both women that he would marry them.

Ojagbemi hanged himself earlier this year when his secret was discovered by Hammond, with whom he had been together for nearly 20 years.

Hammond said her partner’s death was caused by his guilt for the double life. “He just wanted me to notice he was hurting because of what he had done to me,” she said.

Ojagbemi’s other partner, Ayeni said that she knew about Hammond but was told by the doctor that he “did not love her anymore.”

“I would call him ‘baby’ because he was my baby. I would also call him my husband,” Ayeni told officials.

Ayeni said Ojagbemi even called her on the day he died to tell her that he loved her, adding she could not figure out why he had to make such a decision.

Soon after Ojagbemi’s death, however, it was revealed that his double life came at a jaw-dropping price.

Hammond said a credit card firm called her and told her that her deceased partner’s debt to the firm was 10,000 British pounds ($16,100). After a series of phone calls, she found out Ojagbemi owed huge amounts of money to at least 10 or 11 other firms.

The inquest found that the doctor racked up thousands of pounds worth of debt while taking his two partners on holidays.

한편 오작베미는 또다른 애인인 아예니에게 해먼드의 존재에 말해주었으나 해먼드를 더 이상 사랑하지 않는다고 둘러댄 것으로 알려졌다.

아예니는 오작베미가 사망하던 당일에도 자신에게 전화해 사랑한다고 했다면서 왜 이러한 선택을 했는지 이해가 안 간다고 말했다.

그러나 오작베미의 사망 이후 얼마 지나지 않아 그가 어마어마한 빚을 지고 있다는 사실이 밝혀졌다.

해먼드의 진술에 따르면, 그의 사망 이후 신용 카드 회사가 전화를 해와 오작베미가 1만 파운드 (한화 약 1천8백만원)의 빚을 지고 있다고 말했다고 한다. 그녀는 전화를 통해 다른 곳에 문의해봤는데 그 결과 그녀의 애인이 최소 10,11개의 회사로부터 어마어마한 빚을 지고 있다는 것이 밝혀졌다.

조사 결과, 오작베미는 두 애인을 데리고 휴가를 가는 과정에서 이러한 빚을 진 것으로 밝혀졌다.
